Abstract
The orthogonally multiplexed modulation (OMM) families are studied for the multipath fading channels. The OMM families include four different modulation schemes—OMOAM, OMOPM, OMO2AM, and OMO2PM, which provide a multitude of new multidimensional modulations by setting appropriate parameters and basis sets. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the specific examples.
In this thesis, by different basis assignments, the OMM signals are mapped to the OFDM signals to suit for fast Fourier transform implementation. Because of various applications of the multidimensional modulations in practical wireless communications, we analysis the error performance of OMM signals in multipath fading channels. Based on the maximum-likelihood decision rule, the upper bounds and approximated upper bounds of the bit error probability are analyzed and verified by the simulation. Finally, the error performance and the spectral efficiency of the OMM families with two types of basis assignments are discussed in terms of different multipath fading channels, and some specific modulation formats are shown to provide good choices of power and spectral efficiencies.
