Abstract
In this paper I tried to discover the daily life experiences of the female spouses from Mainland China by means of two concepts: ‘space and society are mutually constructed’ and ‘constraining and enabling’ so that I could find out how they recreate a “home” with the sense of belonging in a brand-new environment. Moreover, I also would like to realize how they spread out their social life space through daily life practice. The Gender power relationships in the traditional patriarchal family and the national laws and regulations of crossing borders were the essential factors shaping the life space of the female spouses from Mainland China. Their daily activities were highly restricted in their houses, doing chores associated with domestic works, and the gender power relationships constructd their experiences of being at home. Deprived of the rights for working, most of them invested all their energies and emotions to transform their dwellings into places with significance. But many conditions influenced their identity to their home in Taiwan. The configurations of their dwellings and the meanings of things in their house specifically displayed the transforming processes of their identity to their home at China and Taiwan. While they stayed in Taiwan for a long time and reacquired their rights for working, they would try to pick up their career lives. The social interactions in their working locales, which communicated the understanding and meanings of the participants for the interaction, contributed to the enabling of the human agents. Some working locales related to multi-level marketing had this enabling characteristic and some female spouses from Mainland China would make use of it to fulfill their accomplishments.
