Abstract
With the advent of modern techniques, especially the advance in optical sensors and wireless electronic techniques, capsule endoscopes have been commercially available for the examination of small intestine disorders. However, the present devices still suffer from several limitations: the current capsules propagate passively by exploiting peristalsis through the digestive track and are, consequently, unable to be controlled to localize at an area of interest for a prolonged diagnosis. In addition, the usage of current capsules is restricted primarily to the small intestine and is inappropriate for the stomach. To overcome these limitations, our research team has designed and fabricated a remote magnetic control system targeted for capsule endoscopic operations in the stomach, which contains permanent magnets, optical image modules and power as well as signal transmission line. Utilizing the proposed magnetic guidance control that is convenient, highly efficient, and low in cost, doctors can investigate every portion of the irregular area in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the stomach. Besides, through image post-processing techniques, the quality of consecutive images captured by image capture boards can be greatly improved, which offers doctors a reliable way in disease diagnosis. Finally, based on experiments of magnetic control and image processing, experimental results have demonstrated great potentials and feasibilities of visualizing capability and actively controlling the motion of the capsule endoscope in the stomach.
