Abstract
The prevalent view that Wang Zheng of Tang dynasty ventured the proposition
that the highly regarded Lao Zi—as a work of philosophy by the scholar Lao
Zi—was in truth a work on battlefield strategies. Wang Fu-Zhi of Ching Dynasty
was a strong supporter for the proposition, many scholars along the way have stated
one case or the other in related studies. Most arguing against the direct
categorization would acknowledge that Lao Zi’s simple dialectic approach to topics
defined and shaped many militarian issues and concepts. This recognition then led to
the interesting question of whether or not Lao Zi can indeed in some way be linked to
the well-recognized The Arts Of War By Sun Zi. My research intends to: set up
indices of studies done on the two works; interpret and clarify points of views as they
relate to the issue; compare and analyze the theses as well as
systematically-classified details of the two works; and thereupon try to answer the
question of linkage, and eventually to attempt a resolution to whether or not Lao Zi is indeed also a work on the arts of war.
