Abstract
Ethernet is the major layer-2 technology in local area networks, it is widely used due to the “plug and play” nature and the performance-to-cost ratio. Therefore, it’s desirable to scale Ethernet to a large scale networks as data centers, enterprise and campus networks. Unfortunately, the large scale networks would suffer from the broadcast traffics generated by forwarding table missing and some higher layer protocol. To solve the scalability problem, we propose a new device called EtherAgent+. It can be inserted into an existing Ethernet without changes on software, hardware and protocols. The simulation results suggest that the EtherAgent+ can significantly eliminate the broadcast traffics with limited cache by DHT. Moreover, it still work right when dynamic hosts involved and support the multi-layer architecture. Hence EtherAgent+ can successfully be used to build large scale Ethernet networks.
