Abstract
We conducted a clinical trial at a referral center (National Taiwan University Hospital) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mesalazine (5-ASA) enemas in fourteen Taiwanese patients with relapse of distal ulcerative colitis (UC). Clinical, endoscopic and histological assessments were done at entry and every four weeks. Our results showed that short-term therapy with nightly 5-ASA enemas induced prompt remission in a majority of patients previously unresponsive to conventional therapy. Side effects were few and insignificant. No significant changes were observed in hematology, blood chemistry, or urinalysis. None was withdrawn from the study following initial selection for this trial. Our preliminary results indicated that 5-ASA enemas are an effective, well-tolerated medication for the treatment of UC confined to the distal colon.
