Abstract
Fractions of humic acid demonstrated inhibitory activity against xanthine oxidase (XO). The concentrations of the inhibitors required to produce 50% inhibition (IC50) in the assay mixture were a follow: ethylacetate fraction 21.36 μg/ml; ethanol fraction 34.53 μg/ml; methanol fraction 39.33 μg/ml; residue fraction 75.07 μg/ml. The mode of XO inhibition by the ethylacetate fraction of humic acid was of a mixed type. The mechanism of XO inhibition of humic acid is unknown but may be related to the fact that it contains phenolic functional groups. © 1994.
