Abstract
The construction of road network always suffers from ambiguity. On the one
hand, the presence of this network and its traffic flows offers accessibility and makes
a contribution to economic development. While on the other hand, its presence and
its traffic flows cause landscape fragmentation among national, regional and local
scale. Since this year on, the government has declared the future national
comprehensive development should be on the basis of sustainability in Taiwan. It’s
the turning time for us to pursuit the dynamic balance among infrastructure, ecology
and community all around the country. This research focuses on the effect of
landscape fragmentation by rural road network. It does this by concentrating on
presenting the method and formulae to qualify and quantify the resulting
fragmentation of landscape pattern. Finally, the result of this research tries to
integrate the concerning spatial concepts of accessibility and sustainable
environment and to implement the “traffic calmed rural area” (TCRA) with some
measures to merge the sustainable road network and to promote landscape
connectivity in order to reduce the fragmentation effects in the expanding rural areas.
