Abstract
The effect of frictional interaction at a weakly bonded or unbonded coating/ fiber interface is analysed by studying a single fiber with a finite length of uniform coating on its central region. Residual thermal stresses and applied tensile loads at the fiber ends are considered. The effects of the coefficient of friction at the interface and the thermo mechanical mismatch of the system on the stress transfer from the fiber to the coating are revealed. Through the analysis, a method to predict the residual thermal stress and to eval uate the coefficient of friction is suggested. The possibility of extending this method to evaluate general residual stresses is also addressed. ? 1990, Sage Publications. All rights reserved.
