Abstract
This study was to investigate flower and bud wilting in 24 Phalaenopsis cultivars,
3 Dendrobium cultivars and one Cattleya hybrid caused by ethylene (2~4μL.L-1 12
hrs) and stimulated dark (4 or 7 days) transport, and the efficacy of pretreated 800ppb
1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene), a gaseous ethylene inhibitor. After treatments, the
plants were planted in greenhouse under 50~400µmol.m-2s-1 photon flux density, 21±4
℃ conditions. The resulsults showed that R02308, R02309, and O02419 are ethylene
insensitive cultivars among 24 tested cultivars. Other cultivars are belong to slightly
(++), medium (+++), and very (++++) sensitive to ethylene. Three Dendrobium
cultivars are insensitive to ethylene and Cattleya hybrid is very sensitive to ethylene,
as compared with Phalaenopsis. Ethylene action inhibitor 1-MCP (800ppb 8 hrs)
could completely inhibit flower and bud wilting caused by exposing to 2~4μL.L-1
ethylene for 12hours. 1-MCP also could completely inhibit flower and bud wilting in
simulated dark (4 or 7 days) transport among 10~13 cultivars. The treated plant in
dark having wilted bud 1.46~1.51% was lower than the control 2.70~5.37 under the
greenhouse condition.
So, we strongly suggested that shipping the Phalaenopsis plant with flowering
spike must be pretreated with 1-MCP to protect the flower in good qualities.
