Abstract
In recent years, the accelerating global warming has caused the awareness of environmental protection. Main cities around the world have promoted the concept of green mobility actively while the policy of the Public Bike System (PBS) is one of the promising one. The public bike is mainly designed as short-range feeder system. It has also many advantages such as health, convenience, economy, environmental protection, and fashion. Therefore, by setting up the public bike system, it can enhance the cycling environment in the metropolitan transportation and change people’s perception of bicycle. By doing so, we can create a new style of mobility with the mainstream of public transport system. This study aims to establish a forecasting model for passenger demand of using PBS. The study first conducts on investigation on factors that have an influence on the demand of public bike usage. Urban environment, policy, land use, public transport environment, and socio-economic characteristics, are all valuated. "C-Bike" in Kaohsiung is used as the empirical analysis. With applying the Geographic Information System land use information and most of socio-economic characteristics in the surrounding area of rental station could be analyzed. The stepwise regression method was used to establish the model in order to find main factors affecting demand for the public bicycle rental stations. It is shown that six factors have a significant influence on the demand namely, “Number of resident population”, “Number of employees”, “Total number of rental stations within 2000 meters from the rental station”, “Main trip attraction sites within 2000 meters from the rental station”, “Number of schools within 300 meters from the station”, and “Rental station set up at public transport stations”. The model established in this study could help of forecasting the demand of the public bike rental stations more accurately. It is also expected that results of this study could be a reference for operators and decision makers to achieve the goal of high quality of public bike service.
