Feasibility of Applying Traveltime Tomography Analysis in Underwater Single-side Seismic Survey

Abstract
Seabed characterization is one of the most important tasks in offshore engineering. Underwater geophysical methods can finish the survey efficiently even for large areas. The underwater single-side seismic method is one of the available methods and can provide the Vs and Vp of the seabed for the following engineering designs. The underwater single-side seismic method is the combined survey method for the underwater surface wave method(UMASW) and underwater seismic refraction method(USRM). Restricted by the theory(UMASW) and the low data density(USRM), currently, they can be analyzed with 1D theories. The study aims to apply 2D tomography to analyze the data and determine the required field configurations and inversion parameters. Based on the inversion results from theoretical travel time curves, the underwater single-side seismic method can be analyzed with tomography inversion if the distance between each shot is smaller than 1/3 of the survey line length. Further, the total cells in inversions should be within 10000~13000 and the width of the cell should be 0.175~0.25 receiver spacing. The suvey is suitable for high-resolution and shallow-depth (<5m) investigations. More field data would be collected for verifications.
