Abstract
Molecular-level understanding of electrochemical reaction mechanisms in multiprincipal element (MPE) materials is vital for a range of applications. While it has been shown that introduction of iron in alloy systems such as NiCrFe can improve the stability of chromium oxide, the interaction mechanism between chromium and iron remains unclear. In this work, we present a complementary analysis strategy by applying ICP-MS and HAXPES characterization to resolve their reaction mechanism under acidic pH variation. Our results suggest the formation of an unique thin Cr-Fe mixed oxide structure on the surface that extend the electrochemical stability of the MPE thin film.
