Abstract
Four experiments designed to explore the function of phonological information when we recognize Chinese compound words. In Experiment 1 (lexical decision task) and Experiment 2 (naming task), the frequency effects in Experiment 1 are larger than the effects in Experiment 2. Results showed that phonological information plays an important role in Chinese compound word recognition. In Experiment 3 (lexical decision task), the effects in pseudohomophones of high-frequency exemplars were facilitatory, while in pseudohomophones of low-frequency exemplars were inhibitatory. In Experiment 4 (naming task), the effects of pseudohomophones were both facilitatory. According these experiments, triangle-model is more applicable to explain the function of phonological information in Chinese compound words recognition.
