Abstract
In this two-year project, we aimed at examining the role of component in Chinese
character recognition process. The paradigm of repetition blindness (RB) was used in
the first year. Robust RB for components was consistently found in five experiments
when characters were presented in a rapid serial visual presentation. The occurrence
of RB was not affected by the frequencies of the characters or those of the
components. RB was reduced when the repeated components occupied different
positions or served different functions. These results suggest that both the position and
the function of the components are encoded, and that the semantic component and the
phonetic component are represented and processed differently during character recognition.
