Abstract
Floc migration in freezing chamber, and the effects on the corresponding sludge chemical compositions are discussed based on the FTIR analysis. The changes in chemical compositions of sludge after freezing is found to strongly correlated with the degree of floc migration. The action of ice front movement is suggested to release some extracellular polymers from the sludge body, with the latter being rejected by the ice crystals. The macro-migration of sludge flocs is an essential step to change the sludge chemical compositions, and to improve the dewaterability. Copyright ? 1996 by Marcel Dekker, Inc.
