Abstract
Taiwan is located in the East Asia Monsoon Climatic Zone. Coastal zones in Taiwan are constantly subjected to strong northeastern wind in the winter and destructive typhoons in the summer, as a result, coastal windbreaks are very common in these areas. The existence of a coastal windbreak belt has proven beneficial to crop yields, and effective in preventing the landward migration of coastal sand dunes. Therefore, coastal windbreak is important for sustaining the environmental quality and landuse potential of the coastal zone areas. However, coastal zone development has resulted in environmental changes which in turn influenced the growth and distribution of coastal windbreaks. And the changes of coastal windbreak condition and distribution also have impacts on the quality of coastal landuse activities. This project aims to study the relationship between the evolution of the windbreak distribution and the spatial distribution of other land uses in its neighborhood. The study collected digitized land use data of Yi-Lang County derived from survey results in 1982, 1988 and 1994. Based on the data, the probability for each land use type to occur in a certain distance from a grid cell in the windbreaks boundary was calculated, and the data are used for discriminant analysis to derive two sets of discriminant functions. One is to differentiate whether or not a grid cell in the windbreak boundary changed its land use during the period between 1982 and 1988, and the other is to differentiate whether the cell changed to a particular type of land use. The latter method proved to be better in estimating changes of land use in windbreak boundary. The accuracy rates of both methods in estimating the change of windbreak in four districts of Yi-Lang County were all above 50%. While the poorest estimation was found in Tou-Chen, the accuracy rate in Su-Ao reaches 81.5%. The proposed methods proved to be potentially feasible for estimating local, small scale land use changes.
