Abstract
The recognition of the UHPM rocks is
mainly based on the presence of high-pressure
index minerals, diamonds, coesite, aragonite,
Mg-calcite and others. The preservation of
these minerals through the
retrograde-metamorphism during exhumation
of the rocks depends on the kinetics of the
retrograde reactions. The present research
project focuses on the kinetics of three major
reactions: (1) the nucleation and growth of
quartz or coesite. The new observations have
been published (Huang, 2002; Huang, 2003) in
two (SCI) journals: “Journal of Crystal
Growth” and “European Journal of
Mineralogy” (September-October issue, 2003).
(2) The carbonates polymorph transformation
kinetics during retrogressive metamorphism.
The results have been summarized in a paper,
which has been accepted by a SCI journal
“Mineralogy and Metrology” for publication. (3)
Retrogressive reaction kinetics of UHP
carbonates: solution and exsolution rates of
Mg- calcite during aragonite to calcite
transformation. The experiments are almost
completed. The results reveal some important
and new observations, and will be summarized
in a paper for a SCI journal. In summary, our
new results of the kinetics of these reactions
have significantly improved our understanding
of the UHPM processes.
