Pain, Depression and Sleep Quality in HIV Infected Patients

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate pain, depression and sleep quality and their correlation among HIV infection patients in Taiwan. Design/Setting/Patients:By means of cross-sectional study and purposive sampling, participants were 114 HIV infected patients recruit from clinic and hospital ward at National Taiwan University Hospital. Brief Pain Inventory, Hospital Anxiety, and Depression Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used. Result:Totally 114 patients were enrolled.More than half(56.1%)HIV infected patients in our research report pain symptom, inpatients significant higher than outpatients(χ2=9.14, P=0.02). The most common 3 pain site were head、abdomen and lower limb. The average pain was mild, the average worst of pain was moderate. Although the average of HADS were shown in the normal range, but one in four patients were identified correct depression case(≧11), those patients who without work significant higher than with. More than two in third(68.4%)of HIV infection patients were shown had poor sleep quality(≧5), the pain group compare to non-pain group was significant had poor sleep quality. The worst pain、the average pain、the pain interfere、total pain sites were showed positive correlation with the poorer sleep quality and depression, however depression had positive correlation with the poorer sleep quality in the same. Conclsion:The result of our research showed pain, depression and sleep disturbance is prevalent among HIV infection patients in Taiwan, and pain may contribute significantly to depression and sleep disturbance. The data suggest that the need for pain relief in HIV infection patients in Taiwan, to promote Quality of Life in HIV infection patients, nurses need provide nursing intervention about pain management.
