Abstract
Rocky environment is a special habitat form; however, vegetation studies in rocky habitat are few. Joe-fen-er-shan area, which has a special rocky geological structure, is located right in Guoshing township in Nantou County. In this research, 46 plots were set for investigating rock vegetation association. Six vegetation types were classified from the data. They are Trema orientalis-Sphaeropteris lepifera type、Turpinia formosana-Machilus japonica type、Pyrenaria shinkoensis-Engelhardtia roxburghiana type、Castanopsis hystrix-Pasania konishii type、Archidendron lucidum-Machilus zuihoensis type and Mallotus philippensis-Cyclobalanopsis glauca type. Among these types, Mallotus philippensis-Cyclobalanopsis glauca type is the most typical rock vegetation type and its vegetation composition is very different from others. This suggests that rock vegetation is very unique.
Rocky habitat is a stress for plants, and most of the plants have difficulties in growing there. To understand the mechanism of the rock vegetation, I investigated how trees adapt to this kind of stress. The result shows that the more rock content it has, the more tree sprouts there will be in the habitats. As a result, I infer that sprouting is an important adaptation for plants growing in rock environment. In addition, I also discover that there are many deciduous trees in rocky vegetation which indicates that defoliation is an adaptation for rock environment, too.
