The azulene-appended polynorbornenes were synthesized. Herein, two monomers with different azulene moieties were designed and the polymers were synthesized through ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The azulenes are bicyclic non-benzenoid aromatics which exhibit strong dipole moments and significant nonlinear optical properties.
