Abstract
The services provided by search engines in Internet is a list of ranked documents
nowadays. Some search engines attach a short description for each retrieved document.
However, on the one hand, these descriptions are too short to be informative. On the other
hand, these descriptions are not considerate representations for original documents. As a
sequence, it is not easy for users to judge the relevance. In addition, these descriptions maybe
mislead users. In the meantime towards the new information era, much better services should
be provided for users to easily choose what they want from a great amount of documents.
This paper discusses some possible approaches that provided informative services and then
focuses on the automatic summarization. Providing summarization services for applications
of information retrieval will help users judge the relevance of a document in an effective way.
No doubt, document summarization is an important strategy to promote the performance of
information retrieval.
