Abstract
The CMS experiment, in order to meet the challenges of the harsh environment of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), is undergoing an extensive upgrade programme. The HL-LHC will start operations in 2030 and will provide the general-purpose experiments with an instantaneous luminosity of up to L = 7.5 × 1034 cm−2 s−1 from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. The CMS detectors must operate in a high radiation environment with up to 200 simultaneous pp collisions per bunch crossing. The main goal of the CMS Phase-2 upgrade is to ensure high performance operation of its subsystems under these conditions. The current silicon tracker, endcap calorimeters, beam radiation and luminosity subsystems will be replaced, while significant improvements to the muon spectrometer and barrel calorimeter are introduced. In addition, a new Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP) timing detector layer, a redesigned trigger and data acquisition system are under construction. All these upgrades have already entered the construction phase and will ensure that the CMS experiment will be able to fully exploit the HL-LHC data and perform the most precise physics measurements.
