Abstract
To simplify the system complexity of three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound imaging system and reduce the cost, microbeamforming (MBF) approach has been proposed to reduce the interconnections between the ultrasound probe and the back-end digital system. However, focusing delay errors are still present, which broadens the main lobe and increases the side-lobe and grating-lobe levels, which together degrade the image quality. In this study, we propose an error compensation approach to mitigate the artifacts of the micro-beamforming approach. The compensation factors and headers are estimated at the probe front end and then applied to the back-end digital system to compensate for the errors. The simulation results showed that the side-lobe and grating-lobe levels were improved by 11.73 dB and 19.12 dB, respectively, while the peak signal-to-noise ratios improved by 6-9 dB.
