Abstract
Bibliographical data input, data conversion, and online catalog are influenced by the cataloging rules which the library adopted. From the viewpoint of machine-readable cataloging, the characteristics of computer should be taken into consideration in designing cataloging rules. By examining the structure of Chinese Cataloging Rule (OCR), it was found that the Rule did not relieve from the restrictions of traditional card catalog.
To make machine-readable cataloging and online catalog more effective, it is necessary to review the structure, contents, and cataloging principles of OCR and related problems. Following topics are discussed:the impacts of machine-readable cataloging on cataloging rules, the meaning of main entry, the problems of serials cataloging. The duplication of bibliographic data in MARC format is analyzed. The authors also study the functions of authority control and the design of effective authority control sytsem in the online environment.
