Abstract
Edward Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire stood out as a
classic of the Enlightenment historiography, attracting the interest of generations of historians.
This project intends to discuss Gibbon’s interpretation of Roman Empire
This research focuses on two themes. First, how did Gibbon interpret the ‘decline’of the
Roman Empire? It can be revealed that, despite the commonly accepted claim of the ‘the triumph
of barbarism and religion, Gibbon actually regarded the Augustan settlement as the main cause of
the decline of the Roman Empire.
Second, Gibbon’s choosing the ‘decline’of the Roman Empire, in the age of the
Enlightenment, as the subject of his inquiry seems strange. Why was such a theme so important
to him? There is good reason to argue that, in discussing the decline of the Roman Empire,
Gibbon’s main purpose was to inquire into the origins, and the development, in the Middle age,
of modern Europe.
It is expected ultimately that this research could help to unveil Gibbon’s interpretation of the
decline and fall of the Roman Empire and his view of the origins of modern European
civilization.
