Abstract
The hsin-hsueh (新學) school of thought put forward by Wang An-shi was
the most important current in Song dynasty thinking prior to the rise of
tao-hsueh (道學). During the period from the Northern Song emperor
Shentsung to the accession of the Southern Song emperor Kaotsung, the most
representative work of hsin-hsueh was the San Ching Hsin Yi (三經新義).
During this period, this text was not only used for academic study and
selection of officials through the imperial examinations, but was also
regarded as the official study throughout this period. Thus, it has an
unassailable position in the historical development of Song dynasty
thought. However, after the Song capital moved south, this school fell
out of favor since the responsibility for the loss of the North was
2
attributed to the radical policy changes of Wang An-Shih. In addition,
the rise of tao-hsueh(道學) supported by numerous talented and productive
individuals, completely replaced hsin-hsueh to become the stream of
thought representative of the Song. These factors combined to relegate
hsin-hsueh to merely an aspect of history, rather than a primary object
of scholarly attention.
The hsin-hsuehof Wang An-shi can be seen as one of the notable schools
of thought in the Song dynasty, not only having a brilliant past that set
the tone of its time, but also having an extremely significant influence
on the scholarship of that period. Scholarly study originally searches
for truth, points of critical juncture and induces a return to the original
appearance of history, it is the ideal of those who are engaged in the
collective work of pursuing study. In discussing the establishment and
later development of tao-hsueh, this plan proposes to take the hsin-hsueh
of Wang An-shih as its primary object of study, investigating the
historical status of this scholarly trend, together with its relationship
to the development of dao-hsueh. This should provide a clearer
understanding and grasp of the Song dynasty scholarly development in the
period from the Ch’ing-li (慶曆) to the Ch’ing-yuan (慶元) period.
