Abstract
Thermal noise may not be negligible in coherent optical receivers when the local oscillator (L.O.) power is weak and the receiver bandwidth is large. In this work we have investigated the effect of thermal noise on the performance of an FSK two-branch phase diversity receiver with significant source and L.O. phase noises. We employ simple, well recognized models for the photodetector, preamplifier and equalizer and use Gaussian approximation to evaluate the BER. The results indicate that, for L.O. power in the order of 1 mW and 3 dB loss of the optic hybrid, the sensitivity will degrade by l~3 dB; more importantly, for given linewidth and L.O. power values, an optimum modulation index can be found at which best sensitivity can be achieved. © by Fachverlag Schiele & Schön 1992
