Stereolithography apparatus (SLA) machines are capable of producing an intricate design with high precision and constitute the largest share of the worldwide market. To solve the problems in the process of fabricating assembly parts such as working mechanisms, complex structures, etc. by SLA, such as Laser shadowing, recoating the vat and support structures, a new SLA-embedded process and a rule of support, dubbed as “assistant-support algorithm” are proposed in this paper.
The main idea of this new process is to design the side-fixed and bottom-supported structures inside the cave of the RP part in which the insert is embedded. Then the cave is filled with the resin before post-curing. This can eliminate the shortcomings of the conventional SLA embedding process and fix the functional elements. The new process improves the function of rapid prototype the RP parts possessing the mobility of transmission shaft can be fabricated. Furthermore, it has advantage of fabricating complex, functional system in one step without requiring assembly. As a result, accuracy of the RP part is improved.
The result of this study proves that the proposed new SLA-embedded process can solve the problems encountered when the insert is been embedded in the RP parts with conventional SLA process. Guidelines for designing and the selection of process have also been established to help designers.
