Abstract
In the past decades, hillside land , used to be the “marginal” category of land, has
gradually become the intensity of economics growth due to the scarce of land in Taiwan. The
controversy surrounding the development of hillside environmental sensitive area has certainly
stirred up related issues in the domain of the use of environmental resources in Taiwan, and as
an important part of it.
This study is part of the integrated plan for the “The impact of the development of hillside
land on the environment and land use change” which derives from the practical study on the
Chenyulan watershed (upper portion of the Chou-Shui river). The purpose of this study, by
using “land use change” as a pivot point, is to diagnose the illegal usage of the land’s natural
resources and its social and economical background as well as to work out the mechanism of
land use change in this watershed, and the last, to deconstruct the cause of the overused hillside
land. This sub-report represents the first year of study focusing on the individual aspect,
identifying key factors which form various land use categories. The result shows the
environmental factors for the changes on the individual land operations are “gradient”,
“temperature”, “accessibility about water source”, “soil condition” as well as “traffic
accessibility”. And individual factors are “age”, “level of education”, “ethnicity”, “spouse’s
workforce”, “size of operating land”, “rental of land”, “initial land use pattern”, and “part-time
cultivation”, all contributed to the land structural movement on the Chenyulan watershed.
