Abstract
We use unique Taiwan Birth Registry Records to study the intergenerational transmission in birth weight and whether it varies with socioeconomic status. We find that there is a strong intergenerational correlation in birth weight even when we make the sibling comparison. The probability for an infant to have a low birth weight is significantly higher if his mother/father also has a low birth weight. Also, maternal birth weight has a greater impact on infant''s birth weight than does paternal birth weight.Whether the infant is born in high poverty does not significantly influence his birthweight, but there exists a significant interaction between socioeconomic status and maternal birth weight in low birth weight models. The intergenerational transmission in low birth weight is stronger if the infant is born into a high poverty zip code.
