Abstract
Piezoelectric ceramic ultrasonic transducer is widely used in mechanical and biomedical areas in recent years. Also, the instruments of ultrasonic dental surgery are gradually replacing the traditional magnetostrictive instruments. However, there are risks when the ultrasonic surgical instruments work in the oral cavity, since the ultrasonic surgical instruments may injure the soft tissue. Therefore, it would be necessary that we put stiffness sensor into the ultrasonic transducer to prevent from the danger that could happen in surgery. Moreover, it can help the dentists get better control of the situation in surgery.
To make the transducer able to distinguish hard and soft materials, we conducted the experiments of installing sensor PZT ring between the horn and back of transducer, and installing it at the end of the back of transducer. We found that the vibration displacement of the smart transducer that installs the sensor PZT ring at the end of the back is 2 to 3 times more than the one that installs the sensor PZT ring between the horn and the back. As to the sensitivity, the smart transducer that installs the sensor PZT ring between the horn and back is 2.2 times more than installing the sensor PZT ring at the end of the back. Both designs have the ability to distinguish hard and soft materials.
