Abstract
Quantitative mechanical and electrical
stimuli were applied on the tail of the rat and
the evoked responses in the somatosensory
area of the cerebral cortex were recorded.
Current source density of the FPs is used to
find responsive regions.
The results show that the response centers
obtained from mechanical stimuli match well
to those from electrical stimuli. This
finding, although surprising, is quite different
from the recordings in the thalamus. The
reason is still under investigation. The
somatotopic organization in the SI area is
clearly shown from the data recorded. From
current-source-density analysis a dipole could
be used to represent the response of a
stimulus in the SI area. Hence, it is
suggests that the function of SI in the
cerebral cortex is to locate the stimulus.
