Abstract
Pneumothorax is a frequent complication especially in patients with parenchymal lung disease or under high ventilator settings Traditionally, we diagnose pneumothorax by physical examination, translumination test, chest roentgenogram, or computed tomography. Both physical examination and translumination test are not sensitive. The definite diagnosis is still based on chest roentgenogram but its result is influenced by the experience of radiologists and it sometimes has limitation in the differential diagnosis of localized pneumothorax and emphysema. The result is also limited to anteroposterior supine films, in which radiographic features of pneumothorax may be quite subtle. Besides, it takes minutes to wait the result of chest roentgenogram. For ultrasonography, it is convenient and there is no radiological exposure. The technique involves identification of the pleural line and observation for features such as “lung sliding”and comet-tail artifacts, which are absent in pneumothorax. We present our experience in the diagnosis of pneumothorax by use of chest ultrasonography in the pediatric group.
