Abstract
Global climate changes in recent years, making the international food supply unstable; on the other hand, our government spends more than ten billions NT dollars on the domestic agricultural land fallow policy which underutilizes agricultural land value annually. As a result of it, the study seeks ways to improve this situation.
Take domestic production of herbivorous animals for example, feed costs are the largest expenditure item, accounting for about 40 to 75 percent of the total production cost, and forage cost accounts for about 35 to 50%.
In 2013, the government has worked on "planning domestic areas suitable for planting forage crops and planting Period." as the promotion to activate the fallow areas. Based on this, this study is to investigate and analyze the feasibility of planting red oat as a way to activate the fallow land.
The first part in this study are the literature review understanding Taiwan''s agricultural history, current status of fallow, and red oats planting situation. Also the expert interviews, experimental data, and the production efficiency are mentioned in the latter part.
By these analyses, research results show that activation of fallow land has been significant achievements in planting red oats for forage crop species better than other grasses in 2013.
If the Government could take the research topic of planning red oat for forage crops as a workable option to activate fallow land. It would make domestic red oat’s both quality and quantities improve and help facilitate the development of the domestic dairy industry.
