Abstract
The liberalization, internationalization, and Internet trend of the financial market in Taiwan are forcing the banking industry to face rapid changes. Only those banks which use information technology more efficiently will get the competitive edge and improve their performance through offering a diversity of products and services. Under this situation, the role of information technology has been changed from the operational procedure level to strategy level. Thus, information technology will play an important role and help corporate to get a leading position in a competitive market.
Three information strategies are pursued by firms (i) aligning information resources to satisfy differential needs, (ii) using information technology to provide convenient and unique services and (iii) creating advantages by adopting new information technology.
This thesis adopts a qualitative methodology – case study. The author collected all data from a particular local bank. It is found that the bank’s information technology has been in important part in the bank’s strategy which strengthens its business’ position and defends competitors from entering the market. They use flexible system and infrastructure to create differential application offering services and products within a short period of time and thus gain a competitive advantage in the market. Furthermore, using new information technology allows the bank to provide life style services.
