Abstract
The more involved we are in a relationship, the more likely would we have the insecure feeling of losing the partner. As feelings of insecurity increase, one would develop doubts toward the partner’s leaving the relationship. Consequently, when experiencing emotions, in order to sustain the relationship, one would become ambivalent in expressing one’s emotions, leading to an increase in “ambivalence over emotional expression” (King & Emmons, 1990). Previous research has shown that feelings of insecurity had significant effect on one’s ambivalence over emotion. The present research went one step further to examine the relationship between insecurity and ambivalence over emotional expression was mediated by self-certainty and self-certainty in relationships.
One hundred and eight National Taiwan University students currently involved in a romantic relationship participated in the present study. Correlation analysis confirmed our hypothesis. There was a significant positive correlation between insecurity and ambivalence over emotional expression. Mediation analysis indicated that self-certainty and self-certainty in relationships partially mediated the relationship between insecurity and ambivalence over emotional expression.
Our study showed highly insecure people in relationships did experience high ambivalence over emotional expression. This was mainly because highly insecure people had lower self-certainty and self-certainty in relationships, less confidence in the stability of relationship. This confusion thus made them develop ambivalence over emotional expression when experiencing emotions in the highly valued relationships.
