Abstract
This paper dcscribes the colloidal inieracuons of preformed positivefy charged iron oxyhydroxide particles: zeta potential, coagulation, and Hocculation in the presence of nonionk, cauonic and anionci polyeectolytes In saSt-coagsilated systems, the zeta potential shown as a function of the pH and of the sali concentration is the conlrolSing factor in the formation of particle aggregates, in polymer-flocculated systems, a fiiocierateiy charged aninnic polyelectrolyte was used to adsorb onto particie surfaces and then induced the bridging floccutation of oppofciteh chargt-ct iron oxyhjrfroxidt particles, in which maximum nocculation was observed near zero zeta poienuaL II is pointed out thai the relative importance between polymer bridging and charge m-utralixation mechanism in (he coagulation-ftocculation processes of cotloidal particles is pH dependent Correlation of the magnitude of zeta potential with tile interparticae interaction energy is simlulated by using DLVO theory. Moreover, the present study extends the conventional analysis through considering the temporal variation of the fractional surface coverage of eoHokUil particles by polymers. The theoretical predictions on the stability coefficients are compared with the exp?rimentai reseats. Copyright ?1998 The Society of Chemical Engineers,.
