Abstract
This paper uses the Nan Chi Chang Community as a case study area to explore the formation of urban slums in the Taipei City. Nan Chi Chang Community, as other resettled tenement communities built during 1962 to 1975 to resettle squatter residents, has been identified by government officers, media and even residents themselves as a urgently needed renewal slum community. Why a resettled project for squatter clearance cannot avoid becoming a slum few decades later? It is argued that the spatial and social processes should been understood through careful examination before initiating any renewal projects. Otherwise, the fate of slum will possibly continue at the same place or just transfer to other place. Therefore, this research aims to, firstly, examine the characteristics of a slum community, which to some extent are unique for the Taipei City comparing to those of slum areas in Western cities. Secondly, it tries to reveal the processes of the production of a slum community during the past four decades. Thirdly, it focuses on exploring how the migration experiences and daily life of the vulnerable community residents, especially those female migrants, are related to the developmental contexts of the slum community.
