Abstract
In a typical wireless sensor network, sensor data is transmitted over RF channels, and the stability of the wireless links directly influences the quality of data dissemination. In this thesis, motivated to deploy a dependable wireless sensor network at minimum cost, we investigate: (1) the stability of wireless links in a mid-scale sensor network testbed, called BL-Live; and (2) the use of link quality information to ensure cost-effective deployment. By link quality, we mean the packet reception rate. After monitoring the link quality of BL-Live 35 times in five days, both day and night, we found that links whose quality is over 90% or less than 10% do not change too much at different times. We then use the information about link quality for node deployment. Our experiment shows that the proposed algorithms can reduce the number of nodes required by as much as 25%.
