Abstract
Three heterobimetallic complexes Ru-Rh(COD)Cl (9), Ru-Rh(CO)2Cl (10), and Ru-CuCl (11) have been synthesized with a bifunctional bridging ligand, N,N’-dialkyl-dipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine-10,11-imidazolium (6) (R = n-butyl (a) and n-dodecyl (b)). The bridging ligands composed of phenanthroline and N-heterocyclic carbene provide two different coordination environments to metal centers. In addition, a redox-active linkage moiety, pyrazine, is introduced to serve as electron-relay. These complexes are fully characterized with multi-nuclear NMR, HR-MS, UV-vis, and photoluminescence spectrum. The mono-Ru complex (7a) and heterobimetallic 11a have also been structurally characterized. With cyclic voltammetry and excited-state lifetime measurement of 7a-11a, we found that the metal-metal communication was poor in our designed system. Phototunable catalytic ability of 9b and 11a examined in a serious of catalytic reactions under the irradiation of UV and visible light showed slight differences with/without irradiation. These results indicated that the two metal centers linked by the bifunctional ligand did not have strong metal-metal communication.
