Abstract
Jingxue is not only a subject learned and passed down from generation to generation but
also taken by the traditional intelligentsia as an important kind of action knowledge that guides people
toward happy life. To such a field of study that has so profound and long development and broad
influence to people’s life, it must be worth of if we look at the way it operates, the effect it brings
about and the cultural representation it has. In order to explore the way and significance in the
operation of Jingxue I take the Chinese Classics named ‘Mao-shi Zheng-Jian’as the main
subject to be analyzed and introduce Ernst Cassirer’s (1874-1945) linguistic discourse, Martin
Heidegger’s (1889-1976) approach of art appreciation, Joseph Campbell’s (1904-1987) theory of
myth as methods. Through this way I find that commentaries proposed in ‘Shi-xu’, ‘Mao-zhuan’
and ‘Zheng-jian’form a suite of commentary system that fuses history, poetry, and
etiquette into a systematic whole. Through the bi-direction interpretation between history and poetry,
that expounding poetry with history and look at the history with poetry, and Xing-bi’s way of
discussion on propriety and justice, scholars of Han Dynasty formed a huge, complicated image of
ethical world. In this article I expect to provide a kind of enlightening explanation what the primary
approach of Chinese classics exegesis, that bases on the extraction of the meanings of metaphorical
terms, is and how it affected the development of Chinese culture.
