Abstract
The Degenkolb Engineers reconnaissance team observed three similar district office buildings that had varying levels of earthquake damage during the earthquake reconnaissance trip to Taiwan in February 2016. These three buildings were originally constructed with similar sizes, heights and lateral force resisting system configurations. However, all three buildings were modified or retrofitted with different extents of modification or retrofit in later years. This paper presents seismic evaluation results of three buildings in accordance with Linear Dynamic Procedure (LDP) and Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) in ASCE 41-13 using recorded ground motion records near the three building sites. The comparison of evaluation results with actual building damages indicates that ASCE 41-13 generally provides reasonable estimates of building performance and building damage when LDP is used. The ASCE 41 evaluation results were also compared with those from Taiwan Earthquake Assessment for Structures by Pushover Analysis (TEASPA). Both ASCE 41 and TEASPA evaluation results provided reasonable estimates of the building performance observed after the earthquake. However, strength and deformation capacity calculated in accordance with ASCE 41 were significantly larger than those from TEASPA. A detailed study of these differences is recommended for future updates of ASCE 41. ? Copyright (2018 by Earthquake Engineering Research Institute All rights reserved.
