Abstract
To improve the performance of the MAC protocol for IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor networks in nonbeacon-enabled mode, this paper presents a new energy-efficient MAC design. Our proposed MAC design consists of two phases: schedule exchange phase and schedule generation phase. In the schedule exchange phase, exchanging schedules is simple and doesn't need extra overhead by that schedule parameters are piggybacked in DATA and ACK packets. In schedule generation phase, nodes adaptively determine the sleep-wakeup schedule by schedule parameters and the MAC design allows all nodes to converge on one schedule. The experimental results show that the MAC design achieves higher power efficiency than the original MAC protocol in nonbeacon-enabled mode.
