Abstract
he transactional paradigm has been advocated in environmental psychology within the past two decades. How-ever, the discussion basically remains at the philosophical or theoretical level. In this article, the author reviews studies of object meaning in the field of environmental psychology and discusses the discrepancy between theories and empirical studies. Then I use an empirical study on expreiences of Chinese students in their home and host country to illustrate the research method and a structure of object meaning. In conclusion, I discuss transactions between the person and its object in terms of temporality, the materiality of the object and changes of object meaning.
