Abstract
In recent years, there has been a large number of proposals for routing and MAC layers in wireless sensor networks. Many works propose making changes in a specific layer and assume a certain implementation for the other layers. However, the choice of MAC protocol affects the relative performance of the routing protocols, and vice versa. This layered approach makes the evaluation of individual protocols in terms of overall system performance incomparable. Few works have addressed the interaction between protocols across different layers. In this work, we investigate the interaction between routing and MAC layers. We found that the relative performance of routing protocols might change when combined with different MAC protocols. Additionally, we found that, although the layered architecture contributes to the success of the Internet, it adds a significant amount of overhead to the operation of wireless sensor networks. Our findings provide insights into how sensor network developers can select the most appropriate protocol combination for the application at hand.
