Abstract
Ruminal fluids from dry dairy cows fed high forage (70% forage) or high
concentrate (70% concentrate) diets were used to represent two ruminal conditions
for testing cellulase、xylanase、α-L- arabinofuranosidase、feruloyl esterase
activities of four kinds of commercial fibrolytic enzyme products and their
potential to improve in vitro dry matter digestibility of pre-bloom and blooming
alfalfa, pre-bloom and blooming napier grass and corn silage. Hemicell showed
the highest cellulase、hemicellulase and ferulyl esterase activities among four
tested cormmercial enzyme products。Selfeed and Bio-act mainly showed higher
cellulase and hemicellulase activities. VP-100 had higher hemicellulase and
α-L-arabinofuranosidase activities. Tested in the ruminal fluid from dry cows fed
high forage diet, all four commercial enzyme products increased cellulase and
feruloyl esterase activities. Hemicell and VP-100 significantly increased
hemicellulase activity. Only VP-100 significantly increased
α-L-arabinofuranosidase activity. All four commercial enzyme products
improved the 48-hour in vitro dry matter digestibility of pre-bloom napier and
corn silage. Only VP-100 improved the 48-hour in vitro dry matter digestibility
of blooming napier. VP-100, Selfeed, and Bio-act all improved the 48-hour in
vitro dry matter digestibility of blooming alfalfa. Tested in the ruminal fluid
from dry cows fed high concentrate diet, all four commercial enzyme products
improved the 48-hour in vitro dry matter digestibility of pre-bloom alfalfa.
Except of Bio-act, the other three commercial enzyme products improved the
48-hour in vitro dry matter digestibility of pre-bloom napier. Only Hemicell and
Selfeed significantly improved blooming napier and blooming alfalafa. Maybe
fibrolytic enzymes activity were more suitable to function at lower pH range like
the high concentrate fed ruminal fluid. On the contrary, VP-100 may require
higher pH condition like the high forage fed ruminal fluid. This may be able to
explain why only VP-100 can improved the blooming napier digestibility in the
high forage fed ruminal fluid, and in stead Hemicell and Selfeed improved
blooming napier digestibility in the high concentrate fed ruminal fluid. The corn
grain within the corn silage may cause worse pH declining in the high concentrate
fed ruminal fluid which rendered no opportunity for any commercial enzyme
products to improve the digestibility of corn silage in the high concentrate fed
ruminal fluid.
