Abstract
Library catalogs are for use. Whether or not a library catalog has achieved its
objectives should be evaluated by the users that the system intends to serve. The importance
of catalog use study has long been recognized since 1930s and hundreds of articles and
reports have been produced since then. However, many of the studies were focused on what
types of catalogs were consulted and how successful they were. Among them, only a few
attempted to explore or investigate how users actually utilized the bibliographic information
given in the catalogs or what additional bibliographic elements were needed. In order to
provide a library catalog system that can better serve the intended users, we need more
empirical studies to examine the use and need of bibliographic information. This project
explores how the users of the National Taiwan University Library consult and employ the
bibliographic information given in catalog records. The methods employed to collect data
include observation, questionnaire, and interview. The sample comprises of 358 OPAC
users. According to the preliminary analysis, more than half of them expressed that they
were satisfied with the function and format of the current OPAC system. If new elements
can be added to the system, their suggestion would be elements related to the information
contents of a book, such as table of contents, abstract, introductory information or review
information, etc. Because the project team is still analyzing the survey data and interview
transcriptions, a complete and final report is expected to be published later.
