A pH and temperature sensing needle for muscle tissue ischemia monitoring

Abstract
The paper presents an 18G medical needle, where a silicon micromachined probe containing Au/Cu-based resistive temperature and (IrOx)/AgCl-based sensors is embedded inside and exhibit a linear sensitivity of 0.104Ω/°C and -57.4mV/pH, respectively. The needle is designated for real-time monitor the muscle tissue ischemia resulting from peripheral arterial occlusion. As compared with the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentration change in the animal blood, the animal experimental results have shown that the real-time detected pH value and temperature within the muscle tissue can not only reflect actual muscle conditions with the composition change of interstitial tissue fluid but also differentiate the animal limbs with/without the peripheral arterial ligation.
