Abstract
Main Point of Thesis
The purpose of this thesis is to compare Geling bamboo slips with existing related data, and discusses all sorts of related questions.
Despite damaged severely, the quantity of existing Geling bamboo slips is still quite huge. Geling bamboo slips are primarily used to record divination and sacrifice records, with before discovered the same nature material, has same also has the difference, may make synthesis research. In addition, some are used in several other ways not yet seen in the Chu bamboo slips. It is believed that Geling bamboo slips, found in Pingyujun Cheng’s tomb at Geling village, Xincai county, is another important finding after the discovery of Zouyin Zhao tuo’s tomb at Baoshan knoll, Jingmen city. The major issues of each chapter of the thesis are described briefly as follows:
Chapter 1 is “Introduction”. The chapter first talks about the study motivation and then briefly introduces the Chu tomb at Geling and the bamboo slips found at the tomb. The author later on comments on the earlier literature and then describes the study method of this thesis.
Chapter 2 is “Arrangement, date, and correlative questions about the Chu bamboo slips of Geling”. This chapter begins with classifying and rearranging the decipherment of Chu bamboo slips. It, later on, revises the decipherment itself and its punctuation. The chapter also connects about more than 100 damaged slips, with the total of 50 pieces and researches on the times of the tomb and the bamboo slips. Finally, it talks about the language of yishijiniansuimin以事紀年歲名.
Chapter 3 is “Divination record in the Chu bamboo slips of Geling”. This chapter discussed questions about divination, including types of divination, diviners and divination materials, terms and vocabulary of divination, the symbols in divination, and zhouci繇辭.
Chapter 4 is “Personal sacrifice in the Chu bamboo slips of Geling”. This chapter discusses about purification, pray name, sacrifice vocabulary, sanchuxian三楚先, zhuci祝辭, etc.
Chapter 5 is “Documents of sacrificing the god of the land and the god of grain, and other bamboo slips in the Chu bamboo slips of Geling”. Besides differentiating the administrative divisions in the documents of sacrificing the god of the land and the god of grain, this chapter also discusses some damaged bamboo slips that are disagreeable among the academic circle in terms of their nature differences. This thesis believes those bamboo slips are a list of records regarding presents of visiting a patient or attending a funeral.
Chapter 6 is “Conclusion”. Besides summarizing the major arguments of the thesis, this chapter also offers suggestions on correlative questions and research method.
Furthermore, an appendix of “Original decipherment and this book decipherment comparison” is provided at the end of the thesis.
